The Many Uses of Coconut Oil

You've probably already heard that coconut oil is the new "it" oil, since its medium-chain fatty acids are one of the ideal sources of healthy fat for the body. Coconut oil is even preferred above olive oil for high-heat cooking, like roasting or grilling, because it doesn't oxidize easily or turn rancid.

But coconut oil's benefits also go beyond the kitchen and what most people realize. It's also fantastic as a natural skin remedy. In fact it's been used in parts of Asia and the Hawaiian islands for centuries for this very purpose.

Applying coconut oil to damaged skin can help relieve sunburn pain and signs of aging, sooth dry skin, speed up the healing process of irritation and cuts, and even aid in chronic skin issues such as eczema and psoriasis.
Coconut oil is a botanical source of a-linolenic acid, a contributor to maintaining intercellular structural integrity for the skin's outermost layer called the epidermis.

Coconut oil can help to:
- Control skin barrier functions
- Prevents excess transdermal water loss, keeping skin hydrated
- Promotes healthy skin free from redness and irritation
- Prepares skin for environmental insults such as UV light damage and air pollution
- Provides a source of Omega-3s
- Won't clog pores and cause breakouts
- Can speed up wound healing and prevent signs of aging

You can also use it as an oil treatment on dry hair and scalp, combine it with sugar or sea salt for a face scrub, or add a few drops to your bath water for a hydrating bath wash.

The best part about using coconut oil is that it has zero added fragrances, dyes, irritants, or chemicals unlike most expensive beauty products on the market, so it's even suitable for those with sensitive skin.

Tip: For even more skin-loving benefits using coconut oil, try adding various essential oils to coconut or jojoba oil. Essential oils are highly concentrated oils made from plants that provide an enormous range of benefits - for example lemon essential oil is anti-bacterial and peppermint essential oil helps to relieve headache pain.
