Adrenal fatigue is caused primarily by a disruption of cortisol rhythms. Cortisol is one of the major hormones produced by the adrenal glands. It rises when the body is feeling stressed, either for psychological reasons or due to environmental causes.
Cortisol can not only when you're stressed, but also from a poor diet or high exposure to pollutants. Basically, your body cannot tell the difference between different types of stress and increases stress hormones like cortisol no matter what the specific cause is.
Adrenal fatigue can be a major cause of weight gain in addition to low energy levels that make it difficult to regularly exercise. Cortisol acts as a "fat storing" hormone and uses calories from food to build fat stores, rather than burning them for energy.
So what can you do to restore your adrenal health and lower cortisol levels?
First start by addressing your diet. Your plate should be full of low-calorie but nutrient dense foods, especially vegetables and fruits. Include moderate portions of nuts, seeds, beans, meat, poultry, and fish. You will need less carbohydrates if you aren't being very active, so plan to replace a lot of the grains in your diet with vegetables and lean protein instead.
When it comes to being active, give yourself a break at first in order to build back energy and strength. Focus on getting plenty of rest so you can restore your hormone levels and heal your adrenals for food.
Tip: If you've been feeling run down, most exports recommend taking supplements including Vitamin D, omega-3 fish oils, and a high-quality multi vitamin that contains B vitamins. These help you to heal underlying deficiencies that can be leading to fatigue and causing pain or moodiness.
