My husband Patrick and I opened the Cedar Rapids LearningRx 4 years ago to help students achieve life changing gains by enhancing their learning skills and improving self-esteem and self-confidence through intensive cognitive skills training, better known as “brain training.” Think of cognitive skills training as your “mental toolbox” for learning. When you have the right tools and they are sharpened to work, you have the ability to build a strong foundation, and any task can be accomplished with greater ease and efficiency. When cognitive skills are strong, learning is fast, easy, efficient, and even fun!
LearningRx is different from tutoring, which is simply re-teaching something that wasn’t learned the first time around in the classroom. When an individual comes to our center they receive a comprehensive cognitive skills assessment that pinpoints all of their underlying skills, these skills are essential for learning and reading to be easy and efficient. These skills include long and short-term memory, logic and reasoning, auditory and visual processing, and processing speed. Once skills are identified they are trained. Each client receives and individualized program that helps them overcome specific weaknesses and targets areas of potential gain rapidly and effectively.
LearningRx brain training is based on neuroplasticity. Skills that are practiced get stronger. LearningRx training is targeted and helps to eliminate each client’s individual weaknesses.
Training is different from teaching. Teaching involves trying to learn academic information like biology or math facts. Brain training involves building specific learning skills like memory and attention. When these skills are strong, learning any kind of academic information is easy and efficient.
We work with individuals who have suffered traumatic brain injuries, kids and adults who have been diagnosed with ADD, reading disorders or dyslexia, those just falling through the cracks and senior adults who are looking to stay sharp as they age.
