Holiday Bucket List


1 - Go to Frosty’s Winter Wonderland on Dec. 3 (1-4pm) at the Northwest Recreation Center in Cedar Rapids

2 - Read holiday stories as a family

3 - Take part in the Fire and Ice Festival in downtown Cedar Rapids- Sat. Dec. 3 (see schedule at: https://www.cedarrapids.org/)

4 - Take a ride on the Polar Express in Mt. Pleasant (select dates  http://mcrr.org/PAGES/northPoleExpress.html)

5 - Take a family car ride to look at area Christmas Light displays. A personal favorite is the Blue Creek Christmas display in Walker, IA and the Grinch display off of HWY 151 in Fairfax by the car wash

6 - Donate your time, talent or gift to a local non-profit

7- Check out the Aisle of Lights in Coralville- Dec. 11 (more information at: http://www.coralville.org/)

8 - Along with the Aisle of Lights go to Iowa River Landing and checkout the different activities (and Santa) throughout the day (http://iowariverlanding.com/news/)

9 - Enjoy the sounds of the holidays with the Cedar Rapids Public Library’s White Light Holiday music series. Saturday’s in December (see schedule for what local talent is playing and when).

10 - Enjoy holidays crafts and activities each Sunday at the Iowa City Public Library (see schedule for more details http://calendar.icpl.org/#monthOf:2016-12-01)

11 - Bake some yummy treats- A personal favorite in our house is monster cookies (Santa HAS to have them) and puppy chow.  If you make too many to enjoy- share with your neighbors or take to a local hospital for staff/families or local fire department/police department/ EMT etc

12 - Visit Santa (he’s ALL over the place these days, Lindale Mall, CoralRidge Mall and many local shops have him very busy this time of year)

13 - Take in a holiday show at The Old Creamery Theatre. They have the Elves and the Shoemaker and Wonderettes playing. See schedule and get tickets at: http://www.oldcreamery.com/

14 - Take a tour of Brucemore Mansion’s Holiday Display

15 - See Playtime Poppy’s “Elf the Musical” (http://www.playtimepoppy.org/)

16 - Make Reindeer Food (mix oatmeal and sprinkles in a small ziplock bag and sprinkle on your lawn on Christmas Eve for the reindeer to enjoy)

17 - Enjoy Marion’s Christmas in the Park & Peppermint Walk on Friday, Dec. 2

18 - See a holiday movie each Friday in December at NewBo City Market (movies start at 6pm)

19 - Go to Czech Village and visits the sights and sounds and enjoy Old World Christmas Market on Dec. 4

20 - Decorate cookies

21 - Visit Santa on the Farm at Bass Farms on Dec. 3 from 12-5pm

22 - Take a stroll through the Tannenbaum Forest in the Amana Colonies

23 - Play Christmas Bingo

24 - Enjoy the Holiday Movie Series at Sycamore Cinnemas in Iowa City- Each week on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays is a different holiday movie (http://marcustheatres.com/marcus-specials/marcus-film-series/holiday-classics-films-series)

25 - Take a Horse Drawn Carriage ride in Iowa City on Dec. 10 (see our Iowa City calendar for details)

26 - Have your own Christmas movie night in your house with a hot chocolate bar and popcorn bar to enjoy during it (Pinterest has LOTS of ideas for both)

27 - On Dec. 10th go visit the town of Swisher for their “Very Merry Christmas Celebration”. There will be a lighted parade at 6pm, Carolers, Santa and more at 6:30pm and you can shop from local shops before the parade.

28 - Go on a holiday scavenger hunt

29 - If it would snow…go make a snowman

30 - Play Christmas Bingo
